This course is intended to advance substantially the students’ ability to read an English text accurately, thoughtfully, and critically. We will read from Samuel P. Huntington’s recent, controversial book, Who Are We? : The Challenges to America’s National Identity. Students are required to read assigned sections and consult a dictionary before coming the each class. Topics to be covered in the class are primarily issues of identity in relation to religions, individualism, nationalism, patriotism, Americanization, assimilation, and others. Arguments for and against Huntington’s conservative views will be examined.
