In this course, we will examine some cases of injustices depicted in American literary works primarily in the 20th century. Authors include Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Richard Wright, Philip Roth, Ralph Ellison, and Alice Walker. Topics include racial segregation, discrimination, the color line, passing, and miscegenation; gender inequality and sexism; techniques of exclusion; and political movements that challenge injustices.
