This course is a survey of American literature of the United States from the 17th Century Colonial Period through the 19th Century. We will explore psychological, sociological, political, scientific, religious, moral, aesthetic, and philosophical issues expressed in the literature. Students will learn about Puritanism and other forms of Christianity, Rationalism, Transcendentalism, and other key concepts for understanding American life and values. Students are expected to read carefully in the textbook the historical background to famous literary works, and passages from some of them. The readings, as well as videos of relevant novels and plays, will illustrate relationships between literature and ideas.
