This is an elective course for non-Japanese students (ryugakusei) of the IC and IL departments. Pre-requisite to this course is satisfactory completion of the EPFS Intermediate English I and II course.
The focus of this course is to (1) improve students' general English reading ability through a variety of authentic articles/texts/stories on such cultural topics as music, work, sports, travel, etc. (2) Introduce general reading strategies including scanning, understanding main ideas, guessing meaning from the context, predicting, understanding details, making inferences, etc. (3) Improve and expand vocabulary through graded readers of various genre (4) Cultivate fluency in and enjoyment of reading.
This course will also be helpful for students who wish to eventually take the TOEIC/TOFEL, or other types of English examinations.
Students will be expected to work together actively in small groups/pairs to understand the course content together.
