時事英語の基本を理解することがこの授業の主眼である。英語を手段にして、メディアがいかなる情報を世界に発信しているのかを検討して欲しい。つまり、「英語を学ぶ」ことだけでなく、「英語から学ぶ」ことを目標としたい。 毎回の授業では、英字新聞記事テキストを素材にして、受講生の発表とフィードバックを中心に、時事英語の特徴（ニュースの内容や構成、文化背景、特徴的な語彙など）を把握し、後期応用編への橋渡しをしたい。

評価方法：

出席率　30％、授業時の発表や発言　30％、 コメントカード　20％、期末課題　20%

大澤岳彦『News Flash - English through the Media 　メディア英語の基礎演習』南雲堂、2005年

適宜、大澤執筆の“The Daily Yomiuri”記事や関連記事のプリントを配布する。

注意事項：

語学の授業では、毎回の演習が不可欠であるので、まず出席が第一条件。そして、予習、復習をして、授業で積極的に発表することを大いに奨励する。大澤が執筆している授業当日の”The Daily Yomiuri” を参考資料として使用。同編集部から、記者を迎えたり、編集、取材の現場を見学することも検討している。
