An Introduction to Korean Culture and Society
11002171

This course aims to introduce participants to contemporary Korean culture and society.  Together with the participants, the instructor will draw upon various aspects of the Korean popular culture that have formed the contemporary cultural and societal trends in Korea, often through contrastive accounts on the similarities and differences between Japan and Korea and also the US.  The instructor will provide the participants with reading materials for discussions as well as electronic (media) materials.  Rather than textual interactions in the class, the instructor and his participants will seek to develop activities, tasks, and projects, so that the course can be dynamically facilitated.  Guest speakers will be invited for specific topics.  Class participants will be expected to choose and explore their own topic(s) and search for the relevant materials about Korea and its current popular culture, and share them with the class in the form of a class project which will constitute a major portion of the course credit.  Active participation in all aspects of class activities is a must for this class, as the primary purpose of the class centers on the development of the participants’ English skills through the course content.

This course will provide the participants with a unique opportunity to identify the dynamic aspects of contemporary Korean culture and society through English and also to promote an understanding of their own Japanese selves by exploring a different culture(s) in a contrastive manner.
