If you had guests visiting Japan from a foreign country, where would you take them? How would you explain Japanese culture? This course is designed to help students learn how to explain Japanese culture in English. Students will learn how Japanese culture is portrayed in the world and described in English. Then, students will be encouraged to explore local communities and produce a photo journal to introduce contemporary Japan through their own eyes. They will also be asked to conduct research on topics of their interest, and to give presentations in class. Throughout the course, students will develop research skills, critical thinking skills, and presentation skills. As a final project, students will collaboratively create a tangible product such as a Japanese culture guidebook. (Early in the course, students will be invited to discuss and decide what type of end product they would like to create.) Students will present their accomplishments at a Japanese Culture Fair which will be open to guests from outside of class.
