Various aspects of the culture and history of African countries in the late 20th and early 21st centuries will be introduced. Themes include education, art, music, HIV/AIDS, and tourism. These will be used to highlight differences and similarities between various African countries, and thus provide insight into this complex continent.

評価方法: Assessment will be based on:
Attendance: 20%
Class participation, in-class tasks, and take-home assignments: 30%
Portfolio: 50%

1. Part 1 - What is Africa?
Topics include: The idea of Africa, and geographic, economic, and climatic differences.
2. Part 2 - The arrival of European traders and settlers
Topics include: The slave trade, the scramble for Africa, and colonial Africa.
3. Part 3 - Decolonisation of Africa
Topics include: Independence movements, the birth of new nations, and the effects of colonialism on Africa today.
4. Part 4 - African art
Topics include: Traditional and modern examples of art in Africa, African music, and post-colonial literature.
5. Part 5 - Issues in Africa today
Topics include: The roles of women in Africa, education in Africa, HIV/AIDS in Africa, and tourism in Africa.
