This course is geared not only toward deepening students’ understanding about the contemporary world but also enhancing their critical thinking skills through the mass media. Throughout this course, the students have a wealth of opportunities to expose themselves to Media English and to get valuable information by watching BBC News and ABC News clips and by reading newspaper articles. Although guided by the teacher in the beginning, the class meetings mainly comprise two types of student-led sessions that alternate meeting after meeting: (1) a group presentation of a TV news clip selected from the textbook where they are required to lead listening comprehension tasks, explain the language use and the background information of the theme and (2) an information exchange session where “expert” teams following up on their specific topics report their weekly research findings to each other. Based on the information thus obtained, students are expected to write reaction papers, discuss the issues related to themes, and present their ideas. Most importantly, on the last day, groups of students present news clips that they have created as their final projects. Thus, students have ample opportunities to discuss and present their ideas and thereby enhance their English proficiency. For those interested, a visit to interview staff at the Daily Yomiuri office and the British Embassy will be conducted upon their request.
Please note that this intensive course requires regular attendance and out-of-class group preparation. This course is recommended and will be most valuable for those who have acquired at least upper-intermediate level proficiency (TOEIC 600, for example) and seek opportunities to give discussions and presentations.
