This course introduces the eight United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals and what governmental and non-governmental organizations, such as JICA, CARE International, Save the Children, and more, are doing to achieve the goals. Through readings, research and guest speakers, we will learn about basic development strategies for fighting poverty, combating HIV/AIDS, helping children go to school, and preserving the environment. By the end of the course, you will be more familiar with international development vocabulary and be able to discuss and read about development ideas. Assignments include 1) course readings; 2) brief written summaries; and 3) a final group project/presentation in which you will analyze a real-world development issue and have an opportunity to create a solution.
