In this course, we will read For Love of Country: Debating the Limits of Patriotism, by Martha C. Nussbaum with Respondents, edited by Joshua Cohen (Beacon Press, 1996). We will focus on reading the text in detail, examining crucial issues about American patriotism in contrast with cosmopolitanism and universalism. As the world's single superpower, the U.S. faces much criticism both internally and externally regarding its policies. How far is US patriotism regarded as a universal concept within the U.S? What is the relationship between multiculturalism and patriotism? To what extent can they coexist? We will discuss these issues, which are philosophically as well as politically complex, to understand various points of view towards US cultural values. We will also learn how to write well organized, logical arguments.
