Discourse is concerned with the study of the relationship between language and the contexts in which it is used. It describes and analyzes spoken language, such as conversations, classroom interaction, and formal speeches. In addition, it studies the ways written texts (newspaper articles, letters, instructions, stories, etc.) are organized. The aim of this course is to come to a better understanding of natural spoken and written English discourse. Contrasts with Japanese discourse will also be considered.
