The purpose of this course is two-fold: to provide students with the basic knowledge of English phonetics and also to help them improve their English pronunciation. The focus will be on articulatory phonetics, i.e., how we use our speech organs to create speech sounds. The topics will include speech mechanism, vowels, consonants, consonant clusters, stress, rhythm, intonation, and various sound phenomena occurring in natural speech such as assimilation, sound reduction, and deletion. Special attention will be paid to the differences between English and Japanese sound features. Students will also be asked to practice various pronunciation exercises to improve their English pronunciation. ALL THE CLASS SESSIONS WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ENGLISH.
