This is a skills-based class which will develop debating capabilities. After reviewing opinions, brainstorming, reasons and support students will learn how to refute and form rebuttals. We will use contemporary examples for debate such as education, employment and society. Students should therefore be familiar with some aspects of current news events and be prepared to discuss them. Most work will be conducted in groups and students should expect to co-operate with others on a weekly basis in order to make presentations to their peers. Students will gain credit for originality and should make a unique contribution to each class. Homework and class preparation can be expected each week. Since each class will build on the previous week you should not be absent. The exam will take the form of a debate using the skills we learn during class. Since debate is a vital skill in communicating ideas, public speaking and teaching, this class will be useful for students who plan to become teachers or who want to improve their overall communicative skills.
