| This is a skills-based class which will build students confidence in making public speeches and presentations and introduce the first principles of debate. As well as considering the content message of speech we will also examine the importance of the physical message (gestures, the use of voice and eye contact) in order to make a strong overall presentation message. Group presentations will form the bulk of work in this class and short presentations/simulations will be made in every class. You should be prepared to speak out in class and make an original contribution. Homework and class preparation can be expected each week. Each class will build on the previous week so you should not be absent. The exam will take the form of a speech using the skills we learn during class. Since speech and debate is a vital skill in presentation, teaching and communicating ideas, this class will be useful for students who plan to become teachers or who want to improve their overall communicative skills. |

Students must provide themselves with a folder to keep handouts and notes. Since classes will follow on from one another students should not be absent from class. |
