・Class Description
The focus of this class is on current issues in the world that are neglected by the mainstream media outlets for whatever reason. In this class, we will learn about and discuss subject matter such as the media, landmine proliferation, sweatshop labor, the environmental issue of deforestation and conflict or blood diamonds.
・Class format
This class will not only challenge your language ability, but also your knowledge and beliefs about the world. Much of the class is taught in standard lecture style. You will also participate in group discussions and group research projects. To follow the discussions and lectures it will be necessary for you to read all articles give to you before the next class. If you fail to keep up with the reading assignments, then you will not be able to follow the class discussions.
・General Course Outline
The Media - Who and What are they? Can you identify media bias/propaganda?
Landmines - The problems, the victims, the campaign to ban them.
Sweatshops - What and where are they? Why do they exist and who is fighting against them?
Deforestation - What is happening? What is happening to stop it?
Blood Diamonds - Who are the victims? What responsibility do we have as consumers?

テキスト名: There will be no standard text for this class. Instead, we will use a variety of sources for each topic such as, videos, radio news broadcasts, selected pages from books, and articles from a variety of sources. We will also use the Internet as a research tool and create an online class forum. Most of the sources we use are for native speakers of English. While they may have been changed to make them easier, they will still challenge you.

注意事項: Attendance
3x late = 1 absence (More than 20 minutes late, is counted as an absence).
Being absent for 1/3 of the classes = Failure
You are responsible for any notes, or any material that was given in class on days when you are not present. If you cannot come to class due to a sickness or other such problems, please give your teacher a piece of paper explaining why you were absent as soon as possible - not at the end of the semester. Seniors, please provide your teacher with advance notice as to the day you will not be in class due to a job interview.
Regardless of the excuse for being absent, you are still required to complete the assignments and attend class.
