The aim of this course is to use Australian culture and cross-cultural communication as a vehicle for broadening the students'reading and conversational vocabulary, developing their reading and analytical skills and increasing their conversational fluency. Along with these general language objectives there are a number of cross-cultural objectives that include: understanding mainstream Australian culture and becoming aware of the cultural diversity that exists within Australia, learning about Australian patterns of communication and some of the patterns of communication and culture that contrast with Japanese patterns.
The syllabus includes topics that discuss the geographical, historical, economic and social features of Australia that have shaped the nation as we know it today. These topics will be presented using a variety of teaching materials. Videos, newspaper articles, essays, music and poetry and some items from the Aboriginal community will be offered.

評価方法：

Students will be given regular quizzes and simple homework exercises, work on a group presentation
and there will be an end of term test. Attendance and active class participation are also expected.

There will not be an assigned textbook for this class. The instructor will provide the students with details for obtaining reference materials or prepare the handouts and other activities for the classes.

１．	The Dream Time - A presentation of some of the prominent geographical featues using using the descriptions in included in the old Aboriginal legends passed down from generation to generation.
２．	At First They Came In Chains - The History of the First European settlement in Australia.
３．	Hills of Gold - The discovery of gold attracted a rush of hopeful immigrants. Immigration trends since the end of World War will also be considered.
４．	The Legend Behind the Lyrics - A look at the life and some of the works of Andrew Barton "Banjo" Patterson, possibly Austrlia's most popular poet and the lyricist of the famous Australian ballad "Waltzing Matilda". An essay that Patterson wrote descibing the interesting lifestyles of a tribe of Aboriginies will also be featured.
５．	Bush Ballads - Some of the simple ballads focusing on the land and the Australian people will be presented. Students will do some simple recitation as a form of rythmical pronunciation practice.
６．	A Three Bedroom Brick Veneer on a Quarter Acre Block - Housing styles and a general explanation of the urban Australian infrustructure will be presented. Students will be analyzing figures and graphs and comparing them with the Japanese figures.
７．	For 16 Years Accessible To All - A look at the education system in Australia with a special emphasis on the university entrance procedures and the funding received by all students attending university in Australia.
８．	If You Don't Vote It'll Cost You a Note - An explanation of the system regarding the fines for not voting at elections in Australia. The political system in Australia will also be looked at.
９．	The First To Get The Vote - Some of the major contributions Australian women have made will be discussed.
10．	The Japanese Trapeze - One of the first ever groups of Japanese to visit Australia was a trapeze group who went down to Sydney back in the 1890s. The relationship between Australia and Japan over the past 120 years will be reflected upon.
11．	Good Sports - Australia's popular sporting and recreational activities will be presented. The nation's success at the Olympic Games will be discussed and the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will also be introduced.
12．	BBQ - Australian food and culinary habits will be explained as the class prepares a simple barbecue meal for either lunch or dinner, weather permitting!
