What will make you a successful language learner? Some people might say that you need a good teacher. Other people may claim that a good grammar book or dictionary is essential. I think that the most important thing is the student themselves. After all, who has to do the learning? However, in your study of English, although you will probably learn a lot of grammar and vocabulary, you may never study about the most important person in the learning process. The course will have three main parts. In the first section, the focus will be on what type of learner you are. This will include looking at motivation, personality, learning preferences and so on. Through understanding yourself, it is easier to understand your learning style, and your strengths and weaknesses as a learner. In the second part of the course, the focus will be on thinking about how to learn. This includes, time management, you learning needs, and self-evaluation. You will use what you learn in the second part of the course to make your own learning plan. We then work towards our own learning goals with the help of the SALC learning advisors. In the third section, the emphasis will be on your learning strategies. That is, learning techniques to improve your study of vocabulary, listening, speaking and reading. At the end of the course, there will be a final presentation. For this presentation, students will do a survey into a part of the course that interests them. For example, motivation, vocabulary learning strategies, communication styles etc. Grading: This will be based on:Attendance Learning Style Report SALC Module Final Presentation More specific details will be given at the start of the course. Textbooks to be used: Materials will be provided. Instructions to the students: This course will be most useful for learners who plan to continue studying a foreign language after graduating. |
