The main goal of this course is to acquire some paricular skills and strategies for comprehending news broadcast in British English. A certain news item among the latest ones in BBC TV or ITN news broadcast early in the morning on NHK Satellite TV is recorded into your cassette tape when you come to LL, and will be studied both at home and in class.
In order to develop high proficiency in comprehending broadcast news in British English, it is necessary first to have a basic knowledge about RP (received pronunciation)(standard British English), and to have ample knowledge about the people and the society in the United Kingdom. Taking a course of English phonetics or the Introduction to the British Studies" and reading English newspapers on a regular base is recommendable. A routine work in and outside the class is making constant efforts to understand the main point of each sentence after having confirmed the central idea of a given news item, paying special attention to various sound changes caused by fast talk.
The first step to comprehend news in English is to recognize the topic of a given news item. The second step is to be able to find the location of the headline of the news, if any. In case a headline is not provided, you must be able to point out a key sentence that introduces briefly to you what has happened that day. The third step is to comprehend the main point of every sentencein the news . If you can persue each of these three steps successfully, you can reach at last a state where you can summarize the whole news in your own words.
If you fail to fully comprehend the main ideas of some sentences, all you have to do is to select key words in the target sentences and do your best in guessing at the information offered by those sentences. You need to give a full play to your imagination with the help of your background knowledge about the topic.
Presupposing the possible development of a given news story, or predicting what kind of English expression can follow a certain type of word or expression you are studying at the moment may also help you to identify the sounds of English you are trying to clarify. It is almost impossible for many Japenese college students to catch completely every word or phrase in a spoken English sentence and understand their meaning.
One of the most common reasons for a Japanese to make a failure in listening comprehension is that some words in the news are on occasion spoken very fast. When they are spoken fast, the connection of the pronunciation of several words tends to be perceived as a string of unfamilir words by Japanese speakes of English, and accordingly it results in a problem of inefficiency in listening comprehension. Probably the dissapointment the learners of English experience on such an occasion will be very deep, but it will not be fully understood by native speakers of English. Therefore, it is necessary for the students to explore various types of sound changes in oral English and also to cope with various kinds of difficulties peculiar to listening comprehension. The hardest and the most important part of the class activities is the detailed study of perceptual problems in listening comprehension.
What will follow next is very significant. Those difficulties in listening can be coped with the help of knowledge about the English grammar or sometimes by the knowledge of the usages of each word in the English language.
Besides taking this course you can take Proficiency English Course E-44 during the fall semester, and if you wish also to study news broadcast in American English during this pring semester you can take the Proficiency English Course -5, because the content of my Proficiency English Courses for listening comprehension is different from each other. Only the latest news are always taken up as teaching materials in each of my coureses in which news broadcast in British or American English is studied.
