Course Description Introduction to Australian Studies is a course which provides students with an opportunity to study some aspects of the history and culture of Australia, a country with a past identified as a colony in the British Empire and a future as an Asia-Pacific state. It is this transformation which is at the heart of the course. The course syllabus is divided into a number of topics which examine physical, political, social, and economic themes. In the course of study of these topics, frequent comparison and contrast with Japan will be made. The course contains both lecture and video sources of information. Students will be given brief lecture outlines and other relevant printed material for each topic. Videos used in the course are available for replay in the SALC. Course Objectives 1. Students will become familiar with the terms and concepts used in the study of comparative culture and communication. 2. Students will learn something of the history and culture of Australia as an example of a 'western'culture which nowadays considers itself an integral part of the Asia and the Pacific regions. 3. Students will examine the inter-relatedness of Japan and the seemingly very different culture and history of Australia. 4. Students will learn to observe and refect on different value systems in cultures, and understand the importance of these in acculturation and intercultural communication. |
