The goal of this course is to provide a broad understanding of what it means to be an international volunteer. This class will explore the issue firstly from the point of view of the individual, and the impact that a volunteer can make in the world as well as in his or her own life. Secondly, we will look at the viewpoints of recipients of aid and volunteer work and attempt to understand the ramifications of that work in local communities. We will examine several international aid and volunteer organizations such as, The Red Cross, The Asian Rural Institute, Habitat for Humanity International, and other government and non-government organizations, looking at how and where these organizations operate as well as how to get involved with them. Students will be expected to conduct some research in English as well as participate in English discussion groups and presentation groups. If possible there will be some international guest speakers.
