A global perspective emphasizes the interconnection among human beings, societies, and all species throughout our planet. It includes an "awareness of the diversity of ideas and practices to be found in human societies around the world, of how such ideas and practices compare, and includes some limited recognition of how the ideas and ways of one's own society might be viewed from other vantage points”(Robert G. Hanvey). This course will examine the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required for global citizenship and will illustrate the concept of thinking globally and acting locally. The following five aspects of Robert Hanvey's global perspective will be the foundation for the course: 1.An awareness that we each have a view of the world that is not universally shared and that the perspective of others has its own legitimacy. 2.An informed understanding of the concepts of justice, human rights and responsibilities in the health of society and of the planet. 3.An ability to understand the interdependent nature of change and cause and effect. 4.An awareness of the ramifications of personal and collective choices. 5.An awareness that learning is a cooperative, open-ended journey. Themes to be covered: 1.Cross-Cultural Understanding 2.Tourism and Social Responsibility 3.Being an Educated & Responsible Consumer 4.Asking Questions - Being Part of the Solution Course Requirements: Success in this course requires students to think deeply and speak actively. This is a beautiful opportunity for students to develop not only their English skills, but also their critical thinking skills. 1.Active Participation is essential for success in this course. (Each student will be expected to speak during every class - in both group & whole class discussions.) 2.Students will be responsible for new vocabulary and will be quizzed during each new topic of study. 3.Students will write in-class & out of class reflective statements (less than 1 page) throughout the course. 4.Students will give a brief poster presentation at the end of each topic of study. 5.Students will have two multiple choice tests covering all course content. 6.Students will participate in their own "take action" project (to be discussed in class). 7.Students will write one paper based upon pre-approved topics provided by the instructor, or a topic of their choice (to be approved by the instructor). |
