What will make you a successful language learner? Some people might say that you need a good teacher. Other people may claim that a good grammar book or dictionary is essential. I think that the most important thing is the student themselves. After all, who has to do the learning? However, in your study of English, although you will probably learn a lot of grammar and vocabulary, you may never study about the most important person in the learning process. The course will have three main parts. In the first section, the focus will be on what type of learner you are. This will include looking at motivation, personality, learning preferences and so on. Through understanding yourself, it is easier to understand your learning style, and your strengths and weaknesses as a learner. This part of the course will be supported through doing a "learner case study". To do this, students will be expected to interview a learner who is not taking the class (I can help you find one). Through using questionnaires that we will learn about, you will interview the learner and find out about their learning styles and study needs. After doing this, you will need to produce a short report. In the second part of the course, the focus will be on thinking about what learning options are available and what skills you might need to improve for the future. In the third section, the emphasis will be on considering, learning about and improving your learning strategies. Your learner strategies are the methods you use to understand English, your approach to communication and the techniques you use to learn. There will be the opportunity to use to plan your English study, think about your study methods and use your learning strategies in a short SALC study module. At the end of the course, there will be a final presentation. For this presentation, students will do a survey into a part of the course that interests them. For example, motivation, vocabulary learning strategies, communication styles etc. |
