From early history, apparent movement of the sun, moon and stars has guided the most basic of human activities ranging from agriculture to architectural design. The basic purpose of this course is to develop an understanding and appreciation of the cultural roots of Japan and other countries by examining and discussing the place of astronomy in its historical development. Emphasis will be placed on developing an awareness not only of ancient cultures such as Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, and India, but most especially on the cultural history of Japan as it is related to 'the stars'. |
