In this course, students will get an introduction to poetry in English, and will learn how to both read and write short poems. Students will learn about poets from different countries and eras, different forms of poetry such as limericks, haiku, sonnets, and free verse, and the social and global issues that are connected to the poems and the poets. Students who take this course will be expected to write their own short poems, to share these poems with the class, and to support and comment on poems that other students have written. Students do not need to have any experience writing poems in English or in Japanese; they just need to be willing to try. In addition, students will also study grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation through the poems, and will be expected to contribute to the class through discussions.
