英語総合講座-13(IL) Images of U.S. and Japan in the Media: a historical perspective |

We will be exploring cultural images, stereotypes and their presence in the American/Japanese media (e.g. in paintings and illustrations, magazine covers, newspaper articles, Hollywood films, etc.) from a historical perspective. We will also discuss how these images both affected and reflected cross-cultural perceptions and international relations between Japan and the United States from the 18th century to the late 20th century. In this class, students will: - Study about culture and social/political issues in detail - Learn about the historical relationship between the U.S. and Japan - Think deeply and independently about those issues - Practice expressing your ideas/opinions in English through group discussions - Read many texts and articles - Learn new vocabulary words about the course topics - Practice summarizing/explaining the main ideas of something you read - Discuss the homework readings with classmates - Apply your thinking skills to current events - Write summaries and essays on course topics This class IS NOT INTENDED to: - Teach you basic skills in English - Help correct your English/grammar - Examine current (21st century) relationship between the U.S. and Japan Class Activities: These will include lectures, partner and group discussions, individual reports and presentations. |
