Linguistics is the study of language. Almost everyone can use at least one language effortlessly, yet most people probably don't take time to think about how complex language is. In this course we will look at several aspects of language. (See lecture topic list.) Then students will do independent research about language. This will involve reading about a topic, making your own research question, doing surveys and then analyzing the answers you get. The skills you learn in this course should be useful not only for studying language but for doing research about any topic.
Students who are not motivated and willing to work independently will probably not succeed in this course.

評価方法： a few small research projects, one essay, one exam
