This is a theme based integrated skills course which will enable students to develop their English capability through the study of travel and tourism. The course will use authentic written sources such as brochures and pamphlets as well as internet and other communicative texts. The course will also build students survival English for travel situations and for the service industry as well as the cultural differences in travel between Japan and other nations. During class time students will be expected to participate as individuals and also in small groups; some homework preparation for class can also be expected. As part of the assessment, students will be asked to make a presentation of a travel destination of their choice. In terms of skills, students will develop their understanding of English language travel material and gain experience at making short presentations. Students will be expected to make their own unique contribution to the class, and to be actively involved in each 90 minute period. At the end of the course it is hoped that students will have acquired a new perspective on travel and tourism and will be able to understand, and comment on, written and aural travel material that they are likely to encounter on overseas trips.
