English through News and Current Affairs

By use of authentic contemporary English language newspaper texts, web-based material and recorded newspaper stories this integrated course aims to develop reading, listening, speaking and writing proficiencies. The content of these materials will be largely determined by the class members. During class time students will be expected to participate as individuals and also in small groups; some homework preparation for class can also be expected. In terms of skills, students will develop their critical thinking capabilities and have practice at making short presentations to their peers. Students will be expected to make their own unique contribution to the class, and to be actively involved in each 90 minute period. At the end of the course it is hoped that students will have gained a new perspective on contemporary affairs and will be able to express themselves better in English on a broad range of issues.
