前期

This course focuses on the importance of intercultural communication competence for effective international business relationships. The course will sensitize students to important intercultural issues that can facilitate or frustrate international business transactions and will examine various communication strategies and protocols essential for effective international business. As well, the course will enable students to ask the right questions in a multicultural environment and provide a forum in which to address how Japanese culture plays out in international business communication. Themes explored will include international negotiation and decision making, intercultural conflict resolution, communication styles, and cultural value differences. Students will interview international business managers and/or other employees of internationally oriented businesses. As well, students will work in teams to research and deliver a professional, in-class presentation covering one aspect of international business communication. Each student will also research and read at least five current events articles over the semester and prepare a 1-2 page reaction summary for each.

評価方法: The final grade is based upon class participation and attendance (20%), individual interview report (30%), IBC research & reaction summaries「x4」 (20%), in-class group presentation & reflection paper (30%).

注意事項: The class will combine lectures, activities and discussion, with an emphasis on the latter. Class participation will figure prominently in student evaluations. Previous courses on intercultural communication would be helpful, but not required.
Language of Instruction: Japanese and/or English. Unless otherwise specified, written work must be in English. This is a communication course, not a language course.
