In this course stress is placed on discovering and understanding the social or cultural component of language and language learning and the rule-governed nature of language behavior. The course presents an overview of the field of sociolinguistics including language evolution, children's language, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, speech acts, pragmatics, phatic communication, kenesics, pidgens, creoles and lingu franca. Dialect studies including those related to social class, gender, age, and region are reviewed. Also considered are discourse rules (written and spoken) as well as intercultural variations. A review of aspects of bilingualism, multilingualism, and national language planning is included.  

評価方法: 1. Eight one page essays based on the questions and class discussions (choose 8 from 14)48%
2. Student Book/Article Report (5 to 8 pages minimum) based on a sociolinguistic study done in Japanese (report to be written in English) 40%
3. Classroom participation 12%
