Course Description Introduction to Australian Studies is a course which provides students with an opportunity to study some aspects of the history and culture of Australia, a country with a past identified as a colony of the British Empire and a future as an Asia Pacific state. It is this transformation which is at the heart of the course. The course syllabus is divided into a number of topics which examine, physical, historical, political, social and economic themes. In the course of study of these topics, frequent comparison and contrast with Japan will be made. The course contains both lecture and video sources of information. Students will be given brief lecture outlines and other relevant material in class. Videos used in the course are available for replay and study in the Self-access Learning Centre. Course Objectives 1. Students will become familiar with the concepts and terminology used in the study of comparative culture and communication. 2. Students will learn something of the history and culture of Australia as an example of a "western" culture which nowadays considers itself an integral part of the Asia Pacific region. 3. Students will examine the "inter-relatedness" of Japan and the seemingly very different culture and history of Australia. 4. Students will learn to observe and think about different value systems in culture, and understand the importance of these in acculturation and intercultural communication. |
評価方法: | Students will be graded on the basis of two examinations. The mid-term examination is worth 40% of the final grade. The end-of-term examination is worth 60% of the final grade. |
