1. To develop oral proficiency in English to carry out argumentation. 2. To develop critical thinking skills and attitude toward society. 3. To develop the skill to make public speaking in front of audience and the will to communicate positively. Roles of debate activity are various; it is utilized in various social settings that require resolution of problems (e.g. legal courts, the National Diet). Debate is held for political campaign or consciousness raising (Presidential debate, public debate or symposium on various social problems held by universities or local governments). Debate has been considered as an education tool to improve communications skills in general. In this particular class, however, we would like to consider possibilities of debate activity as an educational tool to brush up our English proficiency. Through actual practice of debate, we will experience how debate can contribute to improvement of four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). This class may be appropriate for those who are interested in teaching English as a foreign language; consider how some of the elements of this activity can be applied to English language education. |
