This course introduces students to modern theories of phonology, with a concentration on English phonology and with many comparisons to Japanese. The course briefly reviews English phonetics and then moves on to a description of phonological processes, syllable structure, distinctive features, phonological rules and phonotactics. The major goals of the course are getting students (a) to understand the nature of the English sound system and (b) to see how phonological problems are treated in linguistic theory. The course is challenging but should be especially rewarding for students who are willing to spend some time understanding the sound patterns of English. The course is good English practice and can be useful for students who want to become English or Japanese language teachers in the future.
