The American Family |
Is there a "crisis" of the family in contemporary America? Is there a loss of "family values" ? This course will explore the American family in its historical, cultural, and social context, as well as examine and better understand contemporary (current) family issues. Some of the questions that will be addressed are: What are the rules and roles that make the family, and how are they determined? How is the family changing? How did the "typical" American family of television come about, and just how typical is it? In addition to discovering the role economics, politics, and the media have played in the perception and changing structure of the American family, the following topics will be covered: the changing role of women in the family; gender gap issues; divorce; single parent families; blended families; extended families; gay/lesbian parents, adoptive parents; childless marriages; violence in families; current stressors on families and children; and the impact of race and socioeconomic status on family structure and dynamics. The course will create opportunities for students to think about these topics as their own future issues. Throughout the course, a comparison and contrast will be made between these historical and contemporary concepts of the American family and those of the Japanese family. Students will be encouraged to establish their own viewpoints and expected to express their opinions through in-class discussions, communicative games, presentations, and debates. Students will also participate in an email exchange project with a partner from America, in order to be afforded the opportunity to explore and understand the concepts at a deeper and more personal level. (Partners to be arranged by the instructor.) This course has three main objectives: 1. For students to become knowledgeable about the issues surrounding the concept of the American Family in order to gain a better understanding of the diversity of American culture, and to relate these issues to their own culture. 2. For students to explore and discover their own opinions about these issues. 3. For students to build their English language skills through the varied media and tasks used throughout the term. |
