Language Through Soap Opera

In this course we will be studying language through the medium of a British soap opera. A soap opera is a never-ending television drama, usually broadcast several times a week. British soap operas portray the lives of ordinary families and try to stay as close to everyday life as possible. Current social issues and topics are dealt with through the lives of the characters. In class we will watch sections of the soap opera, study the language used by the characters and look at the context of this language. We will concentrate on aspects which are not generally part of a typical university language learning experience such as modern colloquial language, idioms, and slang.

評価方法: Grading in this class will be based on attendance and participation, and demonstrated efforts and improvements in the following: frequent homework assignments, a vocabulary notebook, a written paper and roleplays.

テキスト名: Handouts will be distributed in class.

授業計画――――――――――――――――――――――――――――――
There is no set syllabus based around lecture topics. Instead, the first 3 weeks of the course are spent becoming familiar with the concept of soap operas, Estuary English (a form of British English), the history of the East End of London, and the characters in EastEnders. Thereafter we spend time each lesson watching sections of the soap opera, studying the vocabulary and grammar in the script, practicing the pronunciation, and discussing the cultural issues which arise from the programme. This is a communicative language course so students must be prepared to work in small groups and learn from each other as well as from the teacher. The rate of progression through the course is not guided by lecture topic, but by the students’ rate of understanding and assimilation of the material.
