Postcolonial Africa

Various aspects of the culture and history of African countries in the late 20th and early 21st centuries will be introduced. Themes include education, art, music, HIV/AIDS, and tourism. These will be used to highlight differences and similarities between various African countries, and thus provide insight into this complex continent.  

評価方法： Assessment will be based on:
Attendance: 20%
Class participation, in-class tasks, and take-home assignments: 30%
Portfolio: 50%

２．Part 2 - The arrival of European traders and settlers
Topics include: The slave trade, the scramble for Africa, and colonial Africa.
３．Part 3 - Decolonisation of Africa
Topics include: Independence movements, the birth of new nations, and the effects of colonialism on Africa today.
４．Part 4 - African art
Topics include: Traditional and modern examples of art in Africa, African music, and post-colonial literature.
５．Part 5 - Issues in Africa today
Topics include: The roles of women in Africa, education in Africa, H/AIDS in Africa, the drylands, and tourism in Africa.
