In this course students will study 'A Streetcar Named Desire' with regard to characters, plot, dialogues, themes, style, symbolism and other artistic qualities, as well as the social and cultural context. Ethnic and gender stereotypes, various psychological consequences of repression of desires and emotions, the social pathology of the American South and other problems will be carefully explored for a deeper interpretation of American life. Students will learn to use appropriate literary and dramatic terminology for insightful discussions of the play. Each student will prepare to act as a character by analizing the role and practicing passages of dialogue in specified episodes. After sufficient preparation, student-actors will give dramatic performances of the play for enjoyment, understanding, and evaluation by the class and professor.
