Words that Moved the Nation I Colinial Days to the Civil War

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with pieces of writing that have been cherished by American peopele.We will read selections of speeches, essays, poems, songs, and lettters that illuminate significant aspects of American history and culture. These are words that were widely discussed in their time, that possess literary quality even now, and that will be remenberd by future generations. In the first semester, we will read the writing of the Fouding Fathers such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. More literary works works written by such writers as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Edgar Allan Poe will be also covered. We will discuss the topics suggested in the works and express our opinions in class and in essays. Students' ability in reading, writing, and speaking will be improved, along with understanding of the Americans' national consciousness.  

評価方法: The grade will be based on attendance, class participation, short essays, quizzes, and a final paper.
