Scottish Cultural Studies

In this course you will learn about Scottish culture from both a historical and contemporary perspective. The more romanticized and nationalistic notion of 'Scottishness' will be critically examined through language, legends, traditions and a brief look at the historical events which have shaped Scottish consciousness and identity. You will then learn about some current issues which affect the lives of Scots today. By watching movies and documentaries you will gain a better understanding of Scotland's past and present and become more familiar with Scottish English usage and pronunciation. During the final part of the course you will have the opportunity to research a topic of your own choice.
