Views of the Heavens; Astronomy in Japan and Other Cultures

From early history, apparent movement of the sun, moon and stars has guided the most basic of human activities ranging from agriculture to architectural design. The basic purpose of this course is to develop an understanding and appreciation of the cultural roots of Japan and other countries by examining and discussing the place of astronomy in its historical development. Emphasis will be placed on developing an awareness not only of ancient cultures such as Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, and India, but most especially on the cultural history of Japan as it is related to 'the stars'.

評価方法: 1. Grades will be based on attendance, participation in class, and completion of the following major assignments
1.Class presentation of star lore or astronomical history related to a culture other than Japan (based on textbook research)
2. Presentation of research related to star lore or astronomical history of Japan, preferably coming from your own Prefecture or Home Area
3. Completion of a photo portfolio of astronomical icons in modern Japanese Society
There will be no written examinations. Since much of the course involves discussion and response to other class members, attendance is mandatory. Please handle your presentation responsibly. Three unexcused absences will result in lowering your final course grade by 10%.

テキスト名: No textbook will be required. Lectures and activities will be supplemented by handouts and other material supplied by the instructor.
