In this course students will intensively study 'M. Butterfly' by the Chinese-American playwright D.H.Hwang with regard to characters, plot, dialogues, themes, style, symbolism and other artistic qualities, the social, political and cultural context, Europian and Asian values, and its evolving meaning for various audiences. This controversial modern play parodies gender stereotypes, and deals with various psychological and social implications of the performative nature of gender identities.
