Issues in Conflict in the US
The problems which face Americans are not problems limited to American society.
They are problems which face or will face all nations and more specifically all people in spite of color or race.
This course is intended for the students who wish to deepen their understanding of contemporary social issues of America by identifying them and discussing them openly.
The class will deal with such issues as AIDS, euthanasia(mercy killing), and the death penalty. The students will be given opportunities to express their opinions in discussion and debate.
Reading materials will be mainly taken from magazines and newspapers, and films will be used to illustrate the issues studied.

１．Introduction of the class and themes. Explanation of grade evaluation. Distribution of text copies.
２．Historical, statistical explanation of AIDS. Introduction of the basic knowledge
of AIDS.
３．By reading an article related to AIDS (transmission mode, symptoms), drill and group discussion,film
４．By reading an article related to AIDS (prevention, cure), drill and group discussion.
５．By reading an article related to AIDS (patient's human right), drill and group discussion.
６．By reading an article related to AIDS (AIDS related crimes), drill and group discussion.
７．Film about AIDS or overall discussion on AIDS. Introduction of Euthanasia (doctor assisted suicide)
Distribution of copies of Euthanasia
８．By watching the film of euthanasia (the conflict of the family), the concept of euthanasia is introduced.
９．By reading an article related to euthanasia (legal aspect), drill and group discussion.
10．By reading an article related to euthanasia (suicide device), draw the picture of the device.
11．By reading an article related to euthanasia (patient's human right), drill and group discussion.
12．By reading an article related to euthanasia (hospice), drill and group discussion.
13．By reading an article related to euthanasia (advance directives), drill and group discussion.

15．Examination on euthanasia
After 15th session, the death penalty is studied and debate is planned.
