This course will present the social and historical trends in the USA from the mid 1800s to the present through a study of the changes in music and music styles. Included is an overview of early church music, Afro-American spirituals and gospel, blues, jazz, swing, country and folk, rock and roll, 60''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s rock, Latin, soul, rap, and new country western. The social implications of these musical changes as well as the impact of the major artists will be considered.
