Images of the U.S. and Japan in the Media: a historical perspective

This course will explore cultural images that the U.S. and Japan have had of each other from the 18th Century to the present. By examining the images (taken from paintings, illustrations, political cartoons, advertisement, newspaper, books, magazine covers, films) the class will discuss ideas such as stereotypes, bias, racism, perception,and how these have affected the relationship between the U.S. and Japan.
The main objectives of this class include
(1)developing students' ability to express their opinions in English
(2)Increasing students' ability to think critically and to incorporate multiple perspectives
(3)Helping students understand the historical relationship between the U.S. and Japan
Class activities will include group discussions, readings, reports, and individual/group presentation.  

評価方法: Class attendance and participation 40%
Homework and class assignments 30%
Quizzes, exam,class presentations/reports 30%
